I lost 3 of my favorite dojos after putting them in a large tank (which I thought drove well and I added bottles of bacteria .My dojos were about 1ft long and very fat.So they ate A LOT -they never had leftovers-never no matter how much I gave them. That means they poop a lot too.Their poo looked like this huge cloud, the tank was floating around and will break if you try to salvage it anyways i figured i was ready to move them from the 50 gallon tank to my 90 gallon ring tank they were fine for a week , then we did a partial irrigation change and the next day 2 were very dead and the other 2 in bad shape I was able to revive one of the 2 but couldn't do the other br ing to support him Live a heartbeat or breath for myself so I let it go. I measured the ammonia levels (two weeks before it was zero) and they were off the chart - I couldn't even measure it. Multiple water changes didn't help (and doing multiple water changes in a 90-gallon tank is tiring), but when I added a bag of zeolite, the ammonia levels dropped significantly within 24 hours. Since I only had one fish left, an additional water change brought the ammonia down to about 0.25, it just doesn't get any lower. I reused this by soaking the bag in chlorinated water - I think I mistook it for another chemical, but it turns the medium from black to its original gray color - so maybe that's ok - I still had no more splashes of ammonia. I've just bought 3 more dojos which will probably arrive quite small so I'm hoping I'm doing it right. I also have a canister filter so instead of opening it up I just hung a bag of zeolite in the tank. I soak it in bleach water weekly and then rinse it out until the bleach smell is gone. I'm not sure if I should do this, but for now it works. I also bought an ammonia alert button for all my fresh water tanks and it continues to stay in the "safe" zone. So I am very satisfied!
