There’s actually two ways to apply these things, well three if you account for the cap. Elgato has several videos on YouTube and their website that show you the two ways. You can either put the top one on first or last and you can either put the bottom on freehand or go ahead and cut the card with the two pieces, in half, very close to the edge of the rear of the bottom decal and then remove the adhesive side backing instead of the top side backing there by giving you a clear plastic sheet to manipulate better and align the bottom decal. I found the best trick was to use this second method where you still have the decal stuck to the top plastic sheet and remove the adhesion sheet and then align it against the hinge using equo-distance on the right and left, that really made it a lot easier.In terms of the extremely thin sides, yes those are hard to position and even getting those off the film there’s the potential to rip them. You just have to go very slow. I ended up lifting the center of the decal with my finger nails by lifting both sides simultaneously to help manage the amount of tension I was putting on the very thin edges.Overall I got mine on where I am perfectly satisfied. However I failed to notice, because the Apple store employees gave me the wrong information, that’s the 2G AirPods don’t come with a wireless charging case. In fact it’s not even an option at time of purchase, that is to say Apple doesn’t sell a version that included the wireless charging case versus a version that didn’t. They only sell the basic wired only charging case with the 2G AirPods.Because it’s not an option Elgato really should’ve left the inside cut out hole for the charging LED in place in their "new version" of this guard. Because now you can’t see the charging LED once successfully applied. Though for the most part you can check your phone and look at the battery gauge whenever you need to know how low you are. The only time you might need to see the charging light is if you’re performing a reset and things just aren’t going your way. So I would’ve liked to see the light regardless. But the guard’s on and I don’t feel like ripping it or destroying it to get it off.But I agree with others that mentioned it since you will always have a case with an internal LED at time of purchase there should be at the very least micro drilled holes that allow the light from the LED through if you have it, like how Apple did with the old unibody sleep indicators on MacBooks.Since the wireless charging case is always a separate purchase with these models the template should’ve never been changed.But what’s done is done and again it’s a minor issue if you keep the battery widget up correctly on your iPhone you only would ever need to look at the light during troubleshooting or if you’re on a bus or something and your headphones aren’t working and you wanna quickly check the charge outside of your phone screen. But again there is another way to do it so that’s all.
