We have three bathrooms in our home, each with a standard oak sink. I painted two of these before using Aqua Coat and gotten pretty good results with 2 coats of primer and 2-3 coats of paint. I was considering painting our kitchen cabinets but really wanted to hide the texture completely so I decided to use Aqua Coat for our final vanity. I thought this would give me a good comparison and see if the extra step is worth the time. I started by cleaning the cabinets and doors, removing the shine and then sanding lightly with 220 grit sandpaper. Once the dust was completely clear, I applied Aqua Coat to each door and drawer surface. I let it dry for 4-8 hours depending on my schedule. Before applying the next coat I sanded lightly with 220 grit sandpaper, dusted and applied the next coat. Before applying the third coat, I sanded lightly with 320 grit. At this point, the wood seemed smooth as glass, but I noticed a few areas that weren't as smooth. Then I applied the final fourth coat and wow the texture was completely filled in and the doors were smooth. Then I started painting with Insl-X Cabinet Coat, applied 2 light coats as a primer, then 2 more coats to finish and waited at least 6 hours. between layers according to painting instructions. I will say that the surfaces of the doors and drawers are very smooth but as you can see in the image uploaded the texture is still visible when the light reflects on it. There's a video on YouTube of a paint channel run by Aqua Coat who did a demo painting the cabinets white and the texture was briefly visible as the light bounced directly off of it but I thought maybe that was because he used two shifts. I was wrong. However, as long as the light is not reflected directly off surfaces, they appear smooth. In addition, they appear smooth with no noticeable grainy feel. I'm just a little disappointed it still hasn't hid the grain. This won't be a big problem with floor level kitchen cabinets, but will be very noticeable with wall cabinets. Considering it takes extra time I think I'll stop using it to paint cabinets. I still give it 4 stars because it fills in the fibers very well, but I deducted 1 star because the fibers are not completely covered. I will probably still use the clear version for some of my wood projects that I don't want to paint but would like to give very porous wood a glassy smooth finish as I am impressed with this product's ability to fill in fibers without distorting the emergence. wood color underneath. Pros: Easy to apply, very low odor, easy to clean, dries quickly, actually fills in fibers and leaves a very smooth finish. Disadvantages: Does not hide fibers on varnished wood. to the type of paint I used as it is very thin but after applying several coats it dries to an extremely durable finish.
