These mats came in a clear, hard acrylic packaging which I opened with a large pair of scissors. It did a good job of protecting the mats from scratches. The cutting mats are transparent and smooth, and also very hard, which they should be. The size is great for card making and scrapbooking as most stamps and embossing folders fit perfectly. I ordered these to replace two cutting mats that were lovingly worn through use. When I put the embossing folders in the Cuttlebug machine, there are no signs of wear on the cutting mats. However, when I use stamps, the stamps leave nicks in the mat; and there is no way to avoid it. It's all part of the wonderful process of making beautiful paper cutouts. Over time they need to be replaced. These mats serve well and do their job of applying pressure or die to the stencil very well, although you may need to add a layer or two of paper to get the best impressions and cuts. I highly recommend this product to replace your cutting mats.
