Review on πŸŒ‹ E3D Volcano Standard Filament Nozzle by Michael Boyle

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Really pricey, thought the narrower resolution would make up for it. Absolutely not.

Benefits: Higher resolution printing than other Volcano tips. The only things that remotely make this tip worth $17: - HOLY SHIT IS EXPENSIVE. If the entire Volcano setup costs $55, this tip should definitely not cost $17. Maybe 5-10 dollars. Maybe.- MUCH MORE NUTRITIONAL. So I printed this on my last day when I have more plastic and almost every print is a bit warped. This problem did not exist with the Volcano 0.6 mm nozzle. My hairspray glass bed doesn't seem sticky enough. Food for thought: Because less material comes out of the nozzle, it also does not store any heat. Because yes. The prints produced by this nozzle are deformed. BAD. I might play around with it later to get better pressure, but until then I'll stick with the stock nozzle. - Update 08/20/2016: The kink situation has been clarified. Heat increased to 215 and speed increased accordingly. I also experimented with the filament cooling settings to keep the printer from slowing down until the print took less than 10 seconds. This allowed the prints to retain heat longer and then cool more evenly. I'll also play with the layer height, it might help. The leaderboard has been updated to reflect the latest results! End User Error! Other thoughts: why aren't they included in the standard eruption package? Charge an extra $5 for the eruption kit and then call it good. Attached photos: 3D printer with nozzle installed. Don't judge me by the wiring! :D Almost 0.6 mm on the left and 0.4 mm on the right. You can see the layers on the right are MUCH smaller. I still have to make the adjustments and I'm sure the layers on the 0.4mm nozzle are as smooth as the 0.6mm nozzle! Folded layer - 0.4mm over 0.6mm. You can see much smaller layers! Printing with a raft, which I've never had to do before to combat warping. The raft was still warped and had little effect on actual pressure.

Pros
  • Quality construction
Cons
  • Requires socket
