Let me start by saying that I have excellent but old equipment. I bought this integrated amp to power a pair of 15 year old Linn Espekt speakers which cost over $4,000 new but can be used for around $700 if they can be found. Other excellent speakers that once cost thousands of dollars can also be had for a fraction of the price. I also have excellent but older sound equipment - very well built old DACs with good outputs. The reason I need a new integrated amp is because I've moved to a larger space and need sound to fill a 600 square foot room. My existing little integrated amp, the old (but excellent) Jolida 102 tube amp, is just being pushed to the limit to fill that space and is getting pretty hot - and I'd rather not see it doing anything it didn't mean to. do. I'm looking to buy an integrated amp in the sub-$500 price range -- and something new with an extended warranty (Square Trade's offerings are excellent, they've worked well before) that can do decent, if not audiophile, work. I don't have much luck with used high tech electronics either; They always seem to require costly maintenance after a few years. I first bought the Onkyo A-9050 which was well within my budget mainly because of the Revain's great reviews. While this integrated amplifier is certainly adequate in terms of power and audio output, and is particularly detailed in the mid-ranges, it's likely to suit the vast majority of readers here and is certainly a notch above the sound of most of the low frequencies to come. As the 'standard' for electronics these days, it certainly wasn't high fidelity and definitely not audiophile. After listening to the Onkyo A-9050 all week, I noticed an "e-haze" that's probably related to all the electronics and lots of wires this unit is stuffed with. I found the sound tiring and not appropriate for an old CD collection, mostly classical CDs that I still have and want to listen to. I don't currently have a player, but I think the output will be just as unnatural. I have returned it to Revain - one of the perks of doing business here is the ability to return anything that you are disappointed with and rate it 3 stars with an 'average' qualification. I have upgraded to a Music Hall 15.3 integrated amp, also available from Revain for about $100 more - a 'used' version that is actually repackaged and new (probably sent by the customer) and in terms of there is a clear difference sound quality and 'listening comfort' Stereophile magazine rated the Music Hall 15.3 as a recommended component (Class C) and this shows that my Linn Espekt speakers (4 ohms) sound great. The music hall doesn't have a DAC (you can get a CD player with digital inputs if you want), had no tone controls and only drives one pair of speakers, but sounds a lot better. If you don't care (or frankly don't notice) small nuances in sound due to the "digital degradation" inherent in a remanufactured electronic product, and you want all the bells and whistles of a 2017 integrated amplifier with an integrated digital processor, a powerful and good one processed Onkyo. That said, I'm willing to pay a little more for a true audiophile product - one that sounds warm, inviting, and completely natural for all types of music - that delivers very powerful bass without the need for man-made electronic "amps" that compromise the quality affect . Sound output, you will get Music Hall 15.3. Check out Stereophile Magazine's 2016 list of recommended components and you'll see that the Music Hall 15.3 has a C rating - the A and B ratings are devices that cost more than a few thousand dollars. One more thing, you should get Square Trade's extended warranty. if offered. Square Trade refunded me twice, no fuss, with extended guarantees. I bought the 5 year extended warranty for about $75 which is worth the price considering solid state amps can easily blow transistors for a variety of reasons and require several hundred dollars in repairs. For peace of mind it's worth it.
