Cheap and portable - scanner

I've been using the Wolverine F2D digital image converter (scanner) for a few weeks now. It's a decent, simple, and inexpensive solution for converting slides and negatives that have probably been sitting in a shoebox for years. This comes in handy for those who don't want another big electronic device. It's small and has one moving part, a sturdy manual slide tray that you slide through after each scan/save. While pressing the button to scan is quick, the whole process, including setting the right lighting and rotating photos, is slow. each photo scan takes an average of 30 seconds. My resulting quality was decent, especially for photos that are now likely to be stored on disc or an external hard drive. The final quality also depends on the age and quality of the foil. My old slides that are over 50 years old have predictable color and damage mottle. I bought a soft bristled makeup brush to clean each slide before scanning - it removes dust and smudges well. While I like this scanner, there are a few features I've worked with. I'm not sure when it will be full (and the image will not be saved). So I periodically turn it off and restart it after 12 scans. It's usually a fairly intuitive process. Even with mediocre instructions, this is a simple machine; Trial and error is a quick teacher. I have used this scanner on my Mac desktop and Sony laptop with no problems. Overall, at a reasonable price ($75 now), this is a simple and portable solution. I would recommend it. Note. Using this type of equipment in Europe is a challenge, my old great scanner died quickly after being on 220v power so overseas this 110/220 is a quick fix.

Pros
  • Lots of positive vibes
Cons
  • Mostly ok but...
