It was very easy to assemble and no tools were required. Everything is just intertwined. I think it took me about 10 minutes from opening the box to assembling the bookshelf. The instructions include a list of components and pictures showing what goes where and easy to follow. The wood of the shelves is smooth and has a dark stain that brings out the texture of the wood and is shiny on one side and not so shiny on the other. All metal parts can be easily screwed together without much effort. The whole assembly is of course a bit heavy due to the metal legs etc. The top metal pieces serve as great handles for moving the bookshelf. The bookcase is a useful addition to any room.
