Package instructions recommend washing in cold water with fabric softener before use. The instructions also recommend line drying or tumble drying on a delicate setting. I followed the washing instructions, washed in cold water and dried in cool air on a gentle setting. I bought it for the boho style so I didn't mind the fading of the fabric. After the first wash, it's still black and not very soft, but soft enough to be a regular Ikea duvet. I also have lots of pillows on my bed and a few more decorative pillowcases on the way so you can't see enough of the comforter to see that it's faded. It didn't bother me as the faded look suits my decor. but this may not be a preference for most people.
