Review on πŸ’‘ Mega-Ray Mercury Vapor Bulb - 160W (120V): Efficient Lighting Solution for Optimal Performance by Kaitlyn Nelson

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Every time I try something different, I regret it - and so does my turtle!

I've been using this brand for 8-10 years(?) They used to not be that well packaged on delivery when I first ordered them but it's improved 100+% in the last few years . Now they know exactly how to pack those fragile onions. I find this to be the most expensive lamp on the market and the difference in price is more than worth it. I'm not a scientist, but I've had my tortoise, horse or Russian tortoise for almost 25 years. No calcium issues with this lamp (Mega Ray) in my early years. Then when I retired 3 years ago and tried cheaper bulbs - more in the 30.00 range - after a few seasons (he overwinters) the problem became weak hind legs. I'm pretty sure this was due to the downgrading of the mercury vapor lamp. After several visits to the vet this past fall before putting him in the fridge per the vet's instructions for supplements, Roco came out from under his new Mega Ray, and within a month he was done on the same supplements, diet, etc those hind legs like a champ!. I credit the improvement to the MR lamp. I can't wait to show the vet his follow up earlier this summer. He eats very well too. better than cheap incandescent bulbs. Not having a UVA/UVB meter, I swap out the bulb every new season (it's often outdoors from mid to late summer) and just bite the bullet for the extra expense. Of the Mega Rays I've used over the years, only one made an annoying buzz, high pitched and really annoying! This year's bulb works well, although it's delicate and occasionally flickers when moved. Then you have to wait for it to cool down before turning it on etc. Sit under it and wait for "Sunshine" to return lol. So I would give 5 because it is undoubtedly better than the Power Sun based on observations of Roco's condition - also last year I tried a cheaper lamp even than the Power Sun but it had no coating on the glass surface down. like Mega Ray and I was concerned about possible eye damage. The reason I only gave it 4 stars instead of 5 was because of its "sensitivity" and it can be a bit unpredictable at times. Over the years I've been able to work with his quirkiness - just leaving him for a while etc. and Rocko has benefited enormously from that. I have had a healthy boy for over 20 years and this light helps a lot to keep him in constant shape.

Pros
  • Decent performance
Cons
