They work well AFTER you've gotten an o-ring to seal them. After seeing the problem others are having with water leaking AROUND the filter instead of going through it and making sure it was installed properly, I put a thin rubber O-ring (most hardware stores sell these) on put the filter that can be reused (I had an o-ring for 7 filters). The o-ring makes the fit tighter when I put the filter in place and COMPRESSES the filter so water has to flow through it. Take a thin one, it should fit between the filter and the wall of the insertion area. I place the ring about 3/4" from the top of the filter then push it in and I can feel the o-ring "rolling up" the filter as I push it in and the filter is very snug and snug.* * See photo. It's about a 2" O-ring and they're cheap. Brita should take advantage of this idea and ship a small O-ring with every box or jar. I think people who complain about the water quality don't understand that the water flows around the filter and is not filtered. After the o-ring the water runs through the filter MUCH longer so I know it's working.
