Well we've got the stubborn kitty that hasn't stopped bouncing the shelves. He has the rest of the house to play with and lots of toys, but he loves food so much and just won't stop climbing on the counter! So we tried spraying water, duct tape, spiked blankets, cat sprays (Type 2), pushing him away, etc. NOTHING worked. THIS STILL WORKED! Hooray. It's been a few weeks and now he pretty much stays away from the counter if there's a rug there. We have to leave it on and it's on stage 2 right now. This is difficult to manage because we had to cover the entire counter so trying to use the kitchen and sink is not an easy task but hopefully eventually he'll get the message and just stop. He's the stubborn cat I've ever met, and even the spiked mats he just jumped on hurt his feet. This is a 6 month old kitten, large and heavy. We took two rugs and connected the ends on either side so they stayed on the counter. There are rubber dividers that we also apply double-sided tape to to keep it in place. Otherwise he just jumped up there, endured the pain, pushed her off the counter and went on his way. However, after securing him with tape so he couldn't be pushed away, he became more docile. I only wish we had gotten him when he was younger, before he could develop bad habits. It rolls up easily and we can leave it on the counter overnight if it doesn't have access to the kitchen. So far the batteries are fine. I noticed someone saying they had it for several days and then it started squeaking and wouldn't stop. This happened to us too, but I found a tiny drop of water under the mat that caused the problem. Make sure your surface is clean and dry. After drying the water and wiping the underside of the mat, it worked fine again. Conclusion: good product, worked when nothing else worked, easy to use, battery operated. Keep yourself clean and be gentle with him. Should work fine.
