Flodget survives Burning Man!

We just got back from Burning Man where we used this pup as the base for our camp shower (along with the much mentioned Triton camp shower heater). The Triton didn't work that well (not too bad, but the environment at Burning Man is UNUSUAL and it just wasn't up to the level we needed), but the Flojet pump was a TOTAL CHAMPION! Five stars for staying in one of the harshest known environments (alkaline seabed at 4000m above sea level and fine dust often blowing everywhere) and never hesitate. We ended up having to remove the heater because it was clogged, but we just hooked the pump up directly to the hose and used solar-heated water (we still have a couple of solar-powered camping shower bags to heat the water naturally). and it totally shocked me. Large water pressure, instant shut off when shower head is closed, never miss a hit. We also used the included filter to get most of the dirt out of the water (although it couldn't filter out the playa dust which is SO fine and ended up passing in the heater, sigh). One important caveat: when I first tried to use this, in my electrical ignorance I used a 10A 12V DC computer power supply. It didn't work at all and I thought I had a bad pump, but I found that it was because pumps and other motors wouldn't run off a "switched" DC supply, only a "direct" DC power supply (I had no idea there was a difference), so I switched to a 12V battery (I used a small 235 CCA motorcycle battery that was $39 at Walmart, connected to a $19 charger from Black and Decker) and it has never let me down. So make sure you have 12 VDC to power this pump and you will be reliable.

Pros
  • Great for a small home
Cons
  • Some issues
