Review on Aqueon Quietflow Internal Filter Gallon Fish & Aquatic Pets by Lisa Rodriguez

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Quiet, unobtrusive, good flow. I like it.

I've only had this filter for a few days but I really like it so far. I bought this to replace the noisy, ugly suspension bio wheel that came with the 20 gallon kit. This filter is very quiet and can be placed very flexibly in the aquarium. It can run horizontally or vertically. The outlet tube is retractable and rotatable. And the flow rate is also adjustable. This way you can place it where it is the least intrusive and you can play with the speed and direction of the current to make it work well with your fish. This came in handy with my 20 gallon tank because even at the lowest current my white clouds and shrimp were darting around like Dorothy in a tornado. Luckily I was able to direct the water so it didn't create too much current and my little creatures seem to swim comfortably in more areas of the pool than they did with the old HOB. And it seems to filter well. I mixed a lot of dirt into the water when moving items around the tank and it cleared the water pretty quickly. a rimless aquarium with no background, doesn't want a lot of unsightly equipment hanging from it, dislikes old-fashioned bottom filters and is unwilling to invest in an expensive canister filter. Yes, it's big enough to be seen in the aquarium and it can be a little hidden by rocks or plants, but it can't be completely hidden. However, it looks unassuming, with no visible unsightly gears or filter material, so isn't too flashy. (The attached photo shows it in my 20 gallon tank, but it's rated for 40 gallons and will obviously be less intrusive in a tank this size.) Needs replacing. (But if they do, you can throw them away and put them in some other medium.) Replacement cartridge prices seem a little steep, but most cartridges are a bit of a rip-off anyway. A little ordinary filter floss and some activated charcoal in a mesh bag or tights will also help. Because this is a submersible filter, you must remove it completely from the tank to replace the filter media. But I don't expect it to be too much hassle/mess due to the way it was designed. It doesn't hold as much water as a HOB filter and is designed to drain all the water back into the tank when you remove it. So this should be a quick and easy task (although I haven't had enough time to try it yet). Time will tell its durability but so far I'm very happy with this purchase.
