It's just a strainer to catch grease and other particles from cooking on the stove. This filter snaps effortlessly into a suitably sized slot. This strainer catches most of the large particles of fat produced during cooking and many of the smaller particles. Soak it in hot soapy water for easy cleaning. I use this filter in a ductless hood system and it works great. I didn't have a hood over the stove so the smoke particles worked. I haven't heard from smoke detectors since installing the hood and this filter.
