My girlfriend insisted on a 'minimal' deck railing so as not to obstruct our view. My contractor said that installing stainless steel wire and turnbuckles would be very costly in both materials and labor. I was willing to purchase and install "Bullet Cable" brand hardware, which costs about $10 per end, to attach to wooden poles. Then I found a Zonegrace product and figured what the heck costs less than $1.56 per end and more around $0.64 for each pass-through connector (use 2 of these on the center posts you run the wire through), why don't you try it? Following other manufacturers' recommendations, I've tried not to exceed 20 feet or less so that thermal expansion is never enough for my cables to sag and need tightening. In some parts of the country the most stringent reading of building codes dictates 3 inches between wires which equals 11 runs of wire at 36 inches (standard railing height), but in our area 4 inches was acceptable and kept costs down by using only 9 runs spaced 4". I used a 9-hole jig to make sure the spacing of the holes on each post was the same (measured from the bottom). My biggest concern was the cutting and crimping tools to make sure everything was am I ended up buying a Crescent HK Porter 28" ACSR, a 0290FHJ wire and cable cutter, and a SMART RSQ crimping tool after reading bad reviews of fancier hydraulic crimping machines. Both tools worked great with the zonegrace product. I ended up wrapping the cable with tape. before cutting to avoid wear, but this was not essential. I am very happy with the look/price and the ease of installation. I will let you know if there is any sign of rust over time.
