My son said that the old Oreck started smoking when it was switched on. I was about to throw it away but decided to turn it on to see what it was talking about. The brush didn't spin but the motor worked fine, there was no smoke or smell. So I removed the panel from below. The belt broke so I replaced it and reassembled the vacuum. Error on my part. The new belt burned out immediately, causing the smoke and smell my son was talking about. I took it apart again and found that the bearing had shot through and the pulley would not turn. When the engine started and the belt did not rotate, the belt rubbing against the brush burned out. Solution: new brushroll assembly and a set of 3 new rubber belts. The vacuum works great and I paid less than twenty dollars for it.
