flat. The pedals are Crankbros Stamp 1 (big), so the pedals aren't the problem. Every root/stone on the trails made my feet slide unless I was putting 100% of my weight on the pedals (i.e. not on the saddle at all). but other parts of the sole grip MUCH better than the actual pedal contact areas. The pedal contact surface is made of very dense rubber, which is very durable but has little grip! Replace them with some Five Ten Freeriders asap! However, these ALP-Xs would make for decent boat boots.
