Review on ๐Ÿ”— Beadsmith Jewelry Maker's Essential: Efficient Jump Ring Opening and Closing Tool by Jessica Lewis

Revainrating 3 out of 5

4.5/5 (original but later updated)

I would give 4.5/5 if it was an option but it isn't so I rounded down. Basically this ring is great especially for those who are new to chain mail IF you are one of the lucky ones whose fingers are small enough for it to fit. I'm lucky and I love this device! It fits snugly in my thumb knuckle on my non-dominant hand, and I've cut the time it takes to tediously open a bunch of adapter rings at the start of a project in half. Take the ring with the fingers of your left hand, put the pliers in the right position in your right hand, put them in the slot of the ring on your left thumb, quickly turn them 30ยฐ, done. . I have used it on 18 gauge plated copper rings and so far there have been no visible scratches. I admit it could have been better - the ring is definitely made for little fingers and they should have a bigger option. Also, don't expect to be able to close adapter rings with this device - you won't be able to generate enough internal force to close the ring without play. But as long as you keep that in mind, the ring does what it's supposed to and is a great time saver! Edit, 6 months later: I have more experience with chain mail now and hardly use the tool anymore. I found that especially with sawn rings it was difficult to open the rings properly which could result in the ring warping later when you tried to close it - not good for the fine jewelry I usually make. However, if I had to use clamp or machine rings for a larger, less detailed project, I would consider using this tool. So, for those interested in doing big bows costume mail? take action. Post decorations, not so much.
