I use it with Staedtler Mar Lumograph pencils and it's great for sketching. This is a 2-STAGE sharpener. For those unfamiliar with the two-stage sharpener, here is the process to follow. 1) Empty the shavings from the container so you can see the pencil being sharpened. 2) Gently sharpen the pencil on the side marked "1". ". This will sharpen the wood part of the pencil, and the graphite tip may look a bit odd and deformed. You can empty the container again to see what you do in the next step. 3) "Slightly" sharpen the pencil again on the side marked number 2. This will sharpen the graphite tip of the pencil. Don't push too hard or the blade will bite the tip and break it (you'll need something to pick up the broken one to push the tip out of the sharpener) If you've done well, you'll have a pencil sharp enough to be used as a prison sharpener.
