I wouldn't run a biocube without it. This makes changing mechanical and chemical filters quick, easy and clean. I also have some bio-medium and I can just dip it all in the sewage for a water change to wash off the detritus with ease. This greatly increases the amount of water that actually comes into contact with your filter media, making mechanical filtration a small area that you can quickly swap out with a cheap, cut-to-size filter mat every few days. (One sheet of filter mat lasts for several months as the area needed is very small) The noise of the waterfall has also been reduced, which is nice since this tank is in the living room.
