I'm more familiar with Garmin On The Trail models like the eTrex, GPSMAP and Legend units, but the learning curve with this Nuvi 1390LMT "On the Road" is pretty easy. I bought it because it offers lifetime map updates and lifetime VHF traffic. The traffic function proved not to be as accurate and is rarely relative as I don't drive in large metropolitan areas. But if you live in a big city like New York or Chicago, I imagine that would be very beneficial. The map update function works quite well. I had an update when I first bought the device and then another a few weeks later. I think they come out quarterly. The only problem with map updates and the device itself is that the onboard memory is not enough to store all the new maps. I got around this by inserting a blank microSD card and using Garmin MapInstall to download all of North America to the microSD card. It's an extra step, but it works. I would prefer if the device had enough memory for all the maps though, as I've only had it for a few weeks. I would also like the device to be charged via its charging station. Anyway, you have to manually connect and disconnect the mini USB connector. As for how the device works, as we said, it is quite easy to learn and use. It's pretty obvious. The touchscreen isn't as sensitive as, say, an iPhone, but that's probably fine in a jostling car. I spent a lot of money and bought an EcorouteHD accessory. This gives you a wealth of information about your vehicle's performance and fuel economy. I used it to reset the error code on my machine and got paid immediately. I highly recommend the Nuvi 1390LMT. It's easy to use, it's quite small so it fits in your pocket when you're on the go. Maps are accurate and updated regularly. All in all, this is a very good car gpsr.
