I bought this controller to help brake my trailer. The installation on my Tacoma 2010 was plug and play - literally. However, you will need to purchase a wire harness to connect the controller to the pre-wired connection. I used a Tekonsha 3040-P Brake Controller Wiring Adapter for Toyota with this controller and it worked flawlessly. A few things to consider: - Find a good place to attach as the brake adapter needs to be oriented in the direction of travel - Have the settings adjusted slightly to find the right place - Do your homework I have a good spot on the dashboard found which is easily accessible on the fly in case I need to make any adjustments - while it's adaptive and requires minimal tweaking, you may still need to tweak it to suit your preferences. I can only recommend this controller. Tacomas with a tow kit can carry up to 6,500 pounds. I towed a 5300 trailer through 6 hours of hill climbing and braking was effortless with no sweat.
