Replacing Bolts and Washers on This Engine

Toyota requires old bolts to be measured before re-use. Discard if stretched too much. The measurement is made with a large micrometer (5 inches) or vernier calipers since the tolerance is specified to a few decimal places. Measuring ten screws is impractical for most people. Play it safe, buy screws and washers and take care of other things. Check the head pressure, check the valves and rebuild the head as it warps. The same goes for the aluminum block; the allowable limit is 0.002 inch from corner to corner. In addition, the bolts have a diameter of 9 mm. A tap of this size for cleaning the threads of a block is not usually available. If new bolts are not easy to screw in by hand, use an old bolt with 3 splines cut along the threaded portion. I used a cut-off wheel on a grinder. Before use, check the remaining threads for damage and thread them carefully - do not mix up the aluminum threads in the block. Go slow and don't cut corners. There are no more light engines. There are no shims on the 1.5. When the valves are cut up, changing the clearance between the cam and the pushrod (vane) requires new, expensive and unavailable tappets of a certain thickness (thinner) to restore the correct clearance. It is worth evaluating the entire repair situation before working on the machine and buying disposable parts or opening gasket sets. Designers design for production, not repair. Just another example. .
