its solid metal. no sarcasm here, i was expecting it to be a projectile with a lead weight on the bottom, the cord is a bit cheap but its quite picky about knitting. Overall it's a decent lot. If you're looking for something for commercial use, I'd spend the money on something better (no chalk line option). But I digress. for $8 it actually beats everything else. I weighed it on a scale (yes, I was bored), it's actually closer to 12.4 ounces, but I suspect they have looser processing tolerances and only list a minimum sample weight. basically if you are buying this to stack a bunch of these prints on top of each other; Just buy it.
