When you're on the fence. Spend $25

Okay, here are the top answers I was hoping for when looking for outdoor bedding. My needs were long weekend hikes with my car nearby. I would call it the needs of base camp. The weight is heavy and not what I need for trekking. The blanket was the largest I could find for a reasonable price. When you open the sealed plastic packaging, the flame retardant smell is barely perceptible, but after an hour it fills the room and is annoying. This smell reminds me of musty wool, but the comforter is NOT wet, dirty, or anything but new. Like the other reviewer, I washed the comforter twice on a gentle cold cycle. When I took the duvet outside, I shook out the "pilling" between washes and then again after the second wash. The dryer was never used as I just hung the blanket over the heater when I was done. With the addition of fabric softener, the smell was 99% gone and my wife (who is not particularly sensitive) didn't find it objectionable. After the blanket dried overnight, the finished dimensions were 65-1/4" x 91-1/4". The final weight on the kitchen scale is 3 lb 5.3 oz. In other words, it's held up well for its size and weight. The quilt is woven on all 4 sides which looks like a heavy stitching. I see no need to waste time using a sewing machine to reinforce these seams. In addition, wool absorbs less water than you might expect. When I removed the comforter from the spin cycle, I felt a slight dampness, but nothing like a shirt or jeans. This was a pleasant surprise and indicates a high proportion of wool. Some people ask what the remaining 20% is and I understand it's a mix of recycled wool (think workshop if you really get to it) and man made material for durability. This is clearly a heavy duty blanket. To say it's warm is an understatement. We use it as a thermal break under our sleeping bags with both of us in our Kelty 3 person 4-season and it completely covers the bottom. If I was hiking alone it would be no problem to use this underneath me and fold it up for cover. I'm an ML in general and this feature was important to me. In my opinion, in this way the sleeper can reduce the temperature by an additional 10-15 degrees compared to a sleeping bag. Add a Mylar blanket, this wool blanket, and a bag with a zero and almost everyone will be comfortable in 10 degrees or a little below (can't tell for sure unless you factor in the wind and shade). Final Thought: Now that I have the product in my hands I will buy 2 more (one for each machine). While the blanket looks nice and is soft to the touch, it still has a military look (which might be cool for your needs) and may not be appropriate for a guest room. EDIT: Updated to 10/21/16. I then ordered and received 2 more. One for the camper, one for the trunk. In the Ohio River Valley, the wind can pick up quickly and the weather is known to change without warning. More of a mountain environment than the pleasant sound of "Valley". As my previous comments implied, the ceiling is virtually bulletproof. I had to change 2 tires on our Honda 4 wheeler and the ground was wet/muddy with temperatures in the 40's and wet wind. By leaning forward and lying on the floor, I was able to kneel relatively comfortably to get the job done. More importantly, despite being rubbed into the floor, the damn ceiling came out 100% clean with some Woolite cleaner and a soft brush. I assume there was some lube involved as well, but still it all came out with little to no effort. It is true that the other two blankets needed the same "preparation" as the first. Rinse twice, shake thoroughly on the outside and then over the radiator for a few hours. In addition, the smell will change depending on the blanket obtained. The 2nd of them was much stronger than the 1st. Maybe it depends on the storage conditions. In any case, the quilt is still knit on all 4 sides, still tough as a nail and generously (to say the least) large. I didn't measure it, but the amount it shrunk through the washing machine is negligible. IMHO, definitely god sending cold weather. Combine it with a mylar blanket and it will be the perfect base fabric for the inside of the tent. Having camped in the same conditions year after year (year after year) and knowing the expected temperature range at night, I did exactly what I suggested. Without a doubt, in my opinion, the comfort zone has been expanded by another 10-15 degrees colder than just a sleeping pad. Kind regards!
