Review on MG Chemicals Desoldering Braid Length Welding & Soldering by Mark Greenwood

terrible value with soldering and soldering equipment

I had to desolder over 60 pins from a PCB and took advice on using a wick instead of a vacuum pump. I've spent more on a good brand but I'm terribly unimpressed. In short, buy nameless junk for a tenth of the price. Add some flux and go far ahead. It works but the absorbency is way worse than I expected. The video shows the soldering iron/gun being held over the wick on the solder pin for a few seconds, which sucks up all the solder on both sides of the board. I spent 3-4 hours with the wick and only completely desoldered two pins and the rest maybe a third of the way. I probably used half a wick roll for this. It just can't soak up enough until it's completely covered with solder, and it's difficult for it to get deeper into the hole (only accessible from one side of the board). At this rate, I spend $20 on just one project and spend a whole day on it. In fact, it would probably be cheaper to pay someone to do it. I use a 100/140w soldering iron so not enough heat is the problem. I also tried adding flux to the wick and didn't find much of a difference.

Pros
  • desoldering wick
Cons
  • so far so good
