Review on 🎨 HIMI Solid Watercolor Palette - 18 Assorted Colors with Paint Brush, Watercolor Paper - Portable Travel Kit for Beginners, Artists, Students, Kids - Blue by Sasha Hsiao

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Bright, high quality, non-chalky MIYA colors, but the case/palette has design issues.

I would not recommend buying this with the intention of emptying it to put your own colors in the tubes. This is partly because these colors are actually pretty good and that would be a waste. Although no information is available on the pigments, some are very easily identified as reliable lightfast Phthalo Blue, Phthalo Green, Ultramarine Blue, Titanium White, etc. I assume some of them are fugitive (Prussian blue and neon/opera blue). pink) like you. Expect for these colors in each brand. Phthalic acid pigments are copper based and while not toxic to us, they are toxic to aquatic life/fish. This can be a problem when you want to empty them, you have to dissolve them in water to get them out of the pots. They are very well glued, do not fall out and do not come loose. Below are issues with palette functionality that may also change your mind. The colors are very bright, creamy, rewet well and not chalky at all. I confess I wasn't expecting much for this price. So I was surprised that at such a low price they compare to premium school paints like Van Gogh. I found many of the colors to almost match the Pretty Excellent "MeiLiang 36” watercolors installed here on Amazon. Both are very close in performance and this set has been widely hailed as almost pro-level. In terms of quality, they surpass most watercolors in this price range. I see no reason to buy cheap/kids brands anymore, goodbye Prang and Arteza. I wish cheap watercolor sets were as good as they were when I was a kid. One star deduction for the functionality of the case, the pewter and the paper. The paper is of very good quality, I used it to create the color chart in the photo. There are only 6 odd 2" x 4" pieces, although I'm not sure anyone would choose this for painting over a sketchbook. However, paper makes a good gift as the kit includes everything you need to start drawing and color selection right away. They seem to want to promote travelers/city sketches, with product photos showing portability in someone's pocket, as well as a case that seems designed to hold all of these things, perhaps in a purse. Unfortunately, the water brush does not fit into the metal-lacquered plastic housing. So he's less willing to go. A more serious problem is that the bottom of the palette folds dirty side out (the indentations face down and fold down when the painting is finished). So you would also be forced to pack paper towels or sponges to clean it up. The lower collapsible tray can also just lie flat on a flat surface, i.e. a table. It's really great when you have a flat collapsible tray where the blobs of paint don't move at an angle, but instead collect on the sprayed surface. Mine even had a few scratches so you could see the metal under the white spray paint. Unfortunately, you can't use the bottom palette of this set on your lap or on the go because it flexes. If you're using it indoors on a table but don't have much time to paint, the last thing you really need to do is tidy up the pieces on that tray before closing the jar. Due to the rush, I decided not to use the tray at all. I can usually just omit all sorts of almost dry pools of paint to reuse later in container lids. This is not the case with this downward facing tray, it could get your hands/surface dirty. As a result, the colors are amazing for a beginner or even a professional watercolorist on a budget. Not very travel friendly, and the bottom flap looks cool but isn't that functional in practice.

Pros
  • Excellent overall
Cons
  • Doubtful

MIYA vibrant, quality, not chalky paints, but case/palette has design issues.
