Firstly, the rubber smell was quite strong right out of the box, but I left the treads individually laid out on the deck surface for about a week before placing them inside stairs. and it worked - a few weeks later your nose should be pretty close to the tread to smell real rubber. They are very attractive and do the job for humans and our dogs (provide better grip on bare wooden stairs) BUT (second warning) note that the tread is thick enough that it's dangerous to land your foot on the edge . a bit uneven, so it takes a little getting used to. We're not quite old yet (ahem) so it's not a very risky feeling, but something that requires some adjustment in your expectations as you walk up and down these stairs. They don't move on their own, they don't seem to, so that's reassuring. Weight and quality are above expectations.
