Review on Plastic Self Drilling Threaded Self Tapping Mounting by David Herrera

I've spent more time digging broken "self-drilling" anchors out of the wall than installing them. I highly recommend pre-drilling a pilot hole before attempting to install any of these anchors. When this is done they seem to work pretty well. But expect failure at the slightest resistance. I WAS able to use some of the ones that broke off the tips of the drill bits after the pilot hole was installed, but why would I when they should make their own? I don't think I had particularly strong drywall, I think the plastic they are made of is substandard. I also think they will degrade over time and possibly affect their holding power. Beware of hanging anything remotely close to their "50 pound" rating. Buy real nylon for a more reliable result.
