Benefits: two pre-cut sponges at top, space below can be used with media or substituted with other biological or chemical filter media; powered by air, so as long as you have a silent air pump, it will not be noisy and aerate the aquarium during filtration; fits perfectly in the corner of the tank. The bad: The plastic case is pretty buoyant and you pump air through it, so you need a few rocks on the bottom to make it heavier. Strange: the rocks hitting the bottom, weighing it down, contained mud, dried plant debris, and shells (which could mess up the pH over time). This wasn't a problem for me as I replaced the media with my own anyway and really only bought it for the plastic case but be sure to check and clean before use.
