My bottom bracket lagged too long on the Black Diamond Singletrack. I wasn't sure if I needed to replace it so I bought a Park Tool crank puller and this BB tool. Following some instructions on YouTube it was easy to take out, clean and reassemble the BB. The tools were absolutely necessary (not surprising since they were made specifically for a specific task), but they worked so smoothly that the process was fun. I'm not a bike novice, but a repair novice usually stays at the bike shop. Since at LBS half the time is fixed by a teenager I decided to try it myself. Good decision. You also need a crank puller to get to the cartridge. You will then need a large adjustable wrench to grip the hex area of the BB tool. The BB tool fits the Shimano BB snugly and only takes a few turns to remove. After cleaning, the tool quickly put the BB back on, nice and tight. (I didn't need a new BB, just this tool to tighten it.)
