Review on πŸ”Œ Leviton 5981-UCL Clear Horizontal While-in-Use Cover for GFCI/Decora Duplex and Single Outlet by Satish Tegan

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Excellent NEC compliant protective case

I have used a Leviton 5981-UCL protective case during use to replace the original 50 year old outdoor socket covers in my home. The original cases were only waterproof when not in use. In the enclosures, I installed Leviton GFWT1-W Self-Test SmartlockPro Slim GFCI weatherproof and tamper-proof sockets with LED indicators. The cover fulfills its weather protection function as long as the cable is connected to the socket. Small plastic plugs are used to seal the bottom of the cord hole when the cord is not plugged into an outlet. In order to fully utilize the function during use, you need to remove the plastic plug from the cover. My only concern is losing the little ball once I remove it. It would be nice if the lid had a built in slot to store those snails once they are removed and the cords plugged in. I have to remember to glue the cap to the inside of the lid. This is not a breach of the terms of the contract. This is the best utility cap I have found to bring my outdoor plugs up to current NEC standards. I like the transparent cover better than the opaque one because anyone who needs to use the outlet can see where it is immediately without having to guess. It also keeps people from opening the lid to see what's inside. The less meddling and fooling around, the better. The lid came with a quality gasket that seals the back against the outer wall. Sealer should be applied as needed but I have not found it necessary. The coating is attractive and offers excellent protection and weather resistance.
