Review on πŸ› οΈ Efficient Sanding with Shop Fox D2823 Small Sanding Tool by Shawn Reiter

Revainrating 3 out of 5

Solid but cheaply made.

This is a 'regular' sanding block but I have to admit I was hoping for something better. First, it's very heavy and durable, which is good. The wooden case feels good in the hand and has the right shape, and the quality of the wood (oak or ash) feels good. However, the fit and workmanship of the components is questionable. The knurled top handle is cheaply made and roughly finished. The metal plate on the bottom has four spring clips that hold the paper in place, and upon unboxing all clips were bent (although the packaging was undamaged, leading me to believe it was a manufacturing defect). ).It holds the paper well when sanded, although I think it would be easier to put the paper on the plate. The amount of felt on the plate seems sufficient for the time being, although it shrinks a bit after a few uses. It's okay, but it can be a problem in the long run. So yes, the tool works as advertised. But in terms of durability or ease of use over the long term, there will surely be other competing products that will easily outperform this device. If you're a tool collector like me who insists on buying only the best tools that will last a lifetime or more (like the Lie Nielsen), you may be disappointed with the just passable quality of this whetstone. Over the past decade I have learned that Shop Fox products tend to be low cost products that masquerade as high quality. I just gave away some really frustrating Shop Fox squares that I originally bought about eight years ago. The quality of the squares was just plain plebeian and poor and I just never reached for them (instead I prefer to use my Starrett, Veritas, iGuaging or Empire products. I've learned my lesson so I'm guessing that this will be my last shop Fox buy.
