Review on Sony Alpha 16 55Mm Standard APS C by Bruce Cavett

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Is it worth the cost?

I do a lot of paintings and art in museums. To do this you need to take pictures with a fairly wide angle, in low light (no flash allowed), get high resolution and no distortion. So far I've used two good quality prime lenses, a Sigma 16mm and a Sony 1.8/35. The Sigma lens shows quite a bit of distortion, but it's well corrected by the camera. The problem is that I had to change lenses from time to time at the risk of dropping them or damaging the camera sensor. I really liked using a high quality 16-55 zoom lens. I received this new Sony lens and tested it under different conditions. The picture quality is fantastic even in low light conditions, you can see it with very clear images from the first shot. When the image was enlarged on a computer monitor, all the details could be seen in high resolution. Even after cropping at a large ratio, you can print pretty good images. At 16mm there is some distortion. mostly volumetric distortion. A flat painting appears partially folded. For a lens of this price, Sony had to release a camera firmware update so that the correction could be made directly from the camera. But I could make a correction with the appropriate software. I hope Sony releases such an update as soon as possible. If the price was significantly lower and there was firmware, this lens really deserves 5*. I personally regret this investment due to the quality of the product and the fact that I only have to carry one lens>
