Review on Liquitex Professional Super Surface Medium by Carrie Spencer

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Works as advertised

I experimented with acrylic painting on wood, allowing the grain of the wood to show through. However, some woods do not resist paint without a binder. This is where this Liquitex clear plaster comes into play. I made a test patch of varying thicknesses on the back of the panel I was painting. As the instructions say, if you use very, very thin, the layer will turn milky white and lose transparency. I used it on a cedar panel that was finely sanded. (For many years I don't know if cedarwood oils will cause gesso to peel, but it should hold up much better than paint applied directly to the wood.) As for looks, I can see the wood clearly. The grit and plaster made for a very grainy tooth, like fine sandpaper, that took the paint well. Overall I'm really impressed; I think this might be one of the only clear gesso made specifically for acrylic paint, so I'll stick with it for now. Attached is a photo of the panel where I used this in the process; you can still clearly see the wood fibers through the plaster. *NOTE: Nowhere on the bottle or on the Liquitex website does it say that this medium can be used with oils in case anyone was wondering.
