If 5mm is too small and 1/4 is too much, use 6mm.
The brackets are a great replacement for the plastic brackets that recently broke on my kitchen cabinet shelves. Theae staples were the perfect size, 6mm. I went to big hardware stores (Home Depot, Lowes) but they only sold 5mm (too small) and 1/4 (too big). The 6mm hit right in the middle, which was perfect considering the price.
