We bought this gate for the large opening leading from the hallway to the kitchen to accommodate our new puppy on a daily basis and the occasional 16 month old grandson. grandson does not fit. Here's why: the top button is nearly impossible to use as is (as other reviewers have pointed out). If we only use the bottom hook, it will pop out immediately. Works most of the time for a pup. As we have baseboard trim on the bottom of the walls it had to be installed over the trim and this gives the pup enough room underneath to escape when motivated. In addition, raw wood is not attractive at all. In the end we didn't delete it or take anything else, so everything is fine for a while. If you don't have a fairing or want to remove it and want to change the top yourself and don't mind the looks, then that's fine. Otherwise look for something better.
