Review on πŸ” Wixey Model WL133: Precision Laser Guide for Drill Presses by Mac Sterling

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Great, but with a drawback.

The Wixey Laser Drill works very well. I had no problem installing or adjusting it to achieve a reproducible accuracy of about 1/32 inch. I would have given it 5 stars instead of 4 if there hadn't been an inconvenience. I kept forgetting to turn it off and charge the batteries. I finally solved this problem by replacing the two AA batteries with an AC-DC to 3V adapter. To do this I had to install a suitable socket on the back of the battery compartment and move some wires around (see photo) . .As already mentioned, the device can be adjusted to produce intersecting lines, regardless of the height of the workpiece. This is accomplished by creating two intersecting planes of light, each approximately perpendicular to the drill table. "Z-axis adjustment" changes the tilt of each beam to make it perpendicular to the table. However, the included adjustment process is slow and imprecise. I found a better way (see photos). Place the table about 12 inches from the lasers. Place a small mirror on the drill press table so that each ray reflects upwards. Use a small object (about 4 inches high) to hold a small piece of wax paper to intercept both direct and reflected rays. If the "Z axis" is not set correctly, each ray will produce two parallel lines - one line from the direct ray, the other from the reflected ray. Adjust the "Z-Axis" screw so that the two lines converge. At this moment, the beam is reflected perpendicularly from the mirror. Repeat for the second laser. The whole process is very quick and there is no uncertainty as to when the two lines will cross.
