Review on ATEN CS22U - 2-Port USB 2.0 Cable KVM Switch with Built-in Functionality by Mitch Warner

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Easy to use and works well

I am using this to connect an Ubuntu desktop to a Lenovo laptop via a Logitech wireless keyboard/mouse. Connected everything and it worked out of the box. Even the calculator button, volume buttons, and F-keys work just fine. As with many KVMs, the cables can be longer and the USB cables don't need to be plugged in as close to the monitor cables (my laptop monitor input is on the side with only a USB port, so I had to use a USB extender cable to the connection of the other USB). According to the manufacturer, this switch does NOT function as an emulator. I'm not a KVM expert, but the lack of emulation works fine. Sometimes I only use one monitor and switch between computers and my laptop keeps the correct resolution when I switch to desktop. I also occasionally use the laptop in a dual monitor configuration with an external monitor as my secondary or primary monitor and have had no trouble switching back and forth. I've only had it for a day so it can change over time, but I'm happy to use it all day without a single problem. The only reason it doesn't give 5 stars is the length of the cable and the fact that they can easily untangle USB connections so it's more manoeuvrable. Overall solid.

Pros
  • Multi-platform support - Windows, Mac, Linux and Sun
Cons
  • Something is wrong
