I've tried various HomeKit devices over the last few years and finally settled on the Aqara system. Along with the smart hub I also bought 4 door and window sensors. Adding sensors to my HomeKit ecosystem literally took less than 30 seconds between the moment I opened the box and the moment each sensor was integrated into the Home app. I love the fact that as a hub-based touch sensor, I can disconnect from the internet. , I can still monitor and control all my Aqara devices via LAN and hub. (One nice feature of the Aqara app is how you can see how good the Zigbee connection is between the touch probe and the Aqara hub (which I plugged into an outlet near the center of my house). The touch probes are nice and small, easy to install in various locations and seems to have excellent range (confuses you if you open/close doors too quickly.) At $18 they might not be "cheap", but I think the price is spot on , as I haven't had any problems or failures since I installed it.
