Helps a lot to protect tiles from jagged edges. With regular spacers, they'll fall out a few times when you're working on the wall. But with these leveling spacers, you don't have to worry about that. However, be careful when using it on a ready mixed wall as it takes a lot of force to break off part of the seal after removing the wedge. You can easily tear off the tile by trying to pry off the seal. Two things I did to help was I pressed a 6 inch trowel against the edges of the tile, rolling the pliers after I grabbed the gasket and snapped it that way. Another thing that helped was that I flexed the spacer back and forth a few times before replacing the tile. So when it comes time to snap it off, it's much easier to bend it back and forth a few times before putting it on. Make sure your substrate is free of bumps, bumps, and jagged edges so you don't rely on it too much.
