Cheaper alternative to guitar hooks

I learned this trick while working in the theatre; Guitar hooks are expensive and rack hooks are cheap. I bought them to mount various tools on the walls and they did their job perfectly. A few things to note: 1. They smell awful and your hands will smell after touching them.2. These hooks were not wide enough on arrival for an instrument larger than the violin/mandolin; however, it is relatively easy to bend the teeth wide enough. If you have trouble, you can use two crescent wrenches to unscrew them.3. The heavier of my two guitars has worn away the plastic shell from the top of the hook it sits on; It's a minor aesthetic issue, but if you're buying rake hooks to hang your tools I'll assume you're willing to make that compromise. I found the screw part is too short to easily get into the rack at the rail and plaster wall. I ended up attaching it to the wall with an anchor for security. I think drywall would be fine.

Pros
  • Tools and household items
Cons
  • So far so good
