Have you ever read a book because your teacher made it required reading? Either you read the whole thing and can't even remember a tenth of it today, or you read the end of the book and decided that was enough to write a book review. Four decades ago, when I was in school, Moby Dick didn't need to be read, but this book has been on my must-read list for many years. I'm afraid we've reached a point as humanity where all stories should be quick, short and concise. When today's readers pick up many of the classics, they will lose themselves in the lengthy, wandering narratives and obscure slang of the times in which they were written. Some OFFERS take up half a page or more. Do not get me wrong. I'm glad I read this classic, but I'm even happier to have crossed Moby Dick off my list. I will not read again. Is always. Modern historians like Conn Iggulden had the Great White Whale jump off the pages and we would sense the world of whalers around us and immerse ourselves in the experience. It would also be a 5 hour page turner rather than my own Pequod settling into Melville's narrative doldrums for two weeks waiting for new deals to take me to the next novel. I am 53 years old. There are too many books I want to read than I have left here. If you're impatient and want action and adventure in a historical context, maybe like me, Melville just isn't for you.
