1996 F150 5.0 4x4: Parts

1996 F150 5.0 4x4 This module came very quickly and was very easy to install. I don't think I'd pay $200 for it, but since I got it brand new for about 1/3 the price I think it's worth it. I haven't had it long enough to see an improvement in the MPG, but what I really like is the shifting. My truck has a 3 speed overdrive automatic transmission and I love downshifting too much, especially in fast gears. Shifting is now smoother and tends to stay in 4th gear without downshifting as much. I've done a lot of research on these chips and didn't want to spend money on one with so many mixed reviews on different cars, but for the price I found it I jumped at it. Performance seems better and even idles better. The installation on this truck is in the cab on the driver's side behind the electronic brake pedal. You'll need to remove the kick plate that surrounds the pedal, then find the three nuts that attach the electronic brake to the cab wall. Once the three nuts are removed, simply move the brake assembly to the brake pedal (no fiddling with cables required). Once off the road you will see a hole in the side panel that has been blocked by the electronic brake assembly. Look through this hole and you will see the PCM box. If you look at the box you will see that a piece of black plastic is worn to the brim (about 3 inches long and 1 inch wide). Remove this piece of plastic and it will expose the PCB slot that the module will slide into. Make sure you use the included sanding pad to clean both sides of the board for a good connection. I also used the MAF cleaner to wipe off the dirt and let it dry before installing. Insert the module into the slot (do not force) and use the included tape to wrap the PCM to ensure the module stays secure. At this point, reconnect the negative battery terminal (oh yes, make sure you disconnect the terminal before disassembling anything) and start the car. Make sure the check engine light is off and everything is fine and you can reassemble the electronic brake and footboard. Ready! Don't expect an incredible performance boost from this, but I like how the truck performs with the module installed. Apparently the vehicle's PCM can learn to correct the difference made by the module and return to its original operating mode after a while, but this is easily remedied by disconnecting the battery's negative terminal again for at least 15-30 minutes, and this will erased PCM memory. Don't expect to be able to return this item after opening or installing it. Once you open a package, you get stuck on it. I'm happy and looking forward to any MPG increase this can add. Much luck!
