This pump has a terrible plastic/chemical smell

This pump has a terrible plastic/chemical smell! I don't use it as I don't think it's safe for anything in my aquariums. I've been using it for days, weeks, hoping the smell will "burn out" but it doesn't get better. The supplied elbow is also not strong enough for the performance of this pump and broke. This can be very dangerous if small parts fly off.
