The description says the spring is metal but I didn't even see it when I bought it. I thought it was plastic, it is. I only received it today but my 3 year old is a terrorist and has withstood several attempts to destroy it. I have an 11 inch ladder and this narrow drop down works but it's too big and when it actually starts moving it starts skipping steps (going 2 steps at a time) and way too much stumble when going down. My kid still loves it. Also, the photo shows a lot more different colors and lengths than what the toy actually comes with. The ends of the coil are uncut and form a tight ring at each end (like traditional metal coils). So there's a free end that's easy to thread through things and I'm a little worried about my 3 year old. it will get stuck in my one year old's eye. But it's round and not too sharp, I hope. It's a bit too big for my 3 year old to use his little hands to do a lot of traditional two handed motions like just swinging it back and forth. On the other hand, its thickness will likely increase its durability and make it more difficult to roll into a ball. It's like a little metal tight pants. That's cool. Your baby will love it. And it's cheap. Have fun with it.
