Review on GOODRUN Brake Light 5 Function Sequential Waterproof by Carlos Deuschle

Revainrating 2 out of 5

Cool light tricks, but a completely illogical function. Maybe illegal?

In general it seems well made. I had no problem understanding the direction. The tape seemed suspicious, but it was useless for my purposes anyway. I wanted to use it as the only taillight on a Suzuki Samurai. It will completely replace the removed rear lights. Unfortunately I don't think it will work for me, mainly because it has illogical programming. I realize my use was off-label, but I think programming errors are almost as important when used as a high-mounted auxiliary signal as intended. Someone got carried away with having this thing do cool lighting tricks and lost sight of the purpose of its necessary functions. It could be a lot more functional with a few small tweaks to the program and still be just as cool with its light tricks. The bottom line is that each initial state of this light has an animation. As expected, the moving rear light has a lower light output. but it has bright markings moving back and forth across the lane - I think it's cool but potentially confusing and I doubt its legality. The brake light gets brighter from the center and fills in towards the ends. It is maintained at high intensity until the brake pedal is released. When the brake signal is removed, it reverses direction, reducing power, starting at the ends and moving toward the middle. When running tails are not on, it does so in 2 steps from high to low, then low to off. When the taillights are on it still does so in 2 stages, fully dimming for a moment before resuming the lower brightness. Hmmm. ALSO potentially confusing. More on that later. Turn signals work by drawing a tracer across the entire light strip. I would expect mid to end, but no, it goes all the way through the lane ie. A left turn signal creates a narrow trail of light that starts on the right side of the lane, moves to the left and repeats. It seems strange but I think everything is fine. The real problems: First, the brake light. This is an automatic fill/discharge light circuit that lasts approximately 2 seconds and does not respond to a repeated brake signal. Every time you touch the brake pedal you get a fill/dump effect and it doesn't react in any way to repeated brake pedal presses. If you want to bring heightened awareness to someone behind you, you cannot. More serious. Combined driving up with indicators or braking with indicators are not acceptable. Traffic light mode replaces all other modes. If you're on a running tail and turn on your turn signal, the lights will turn off and then begin a narrow track across the lane. Not the best solution for general visibility. If you have a brake light and turn signal on, you won't get change. When braking, you cannot communicate by turning. Unacceptable. I repeat, whenever you turn on the running tails and turn on the turn signal, the only illumination is a bright narrow tracer moving across the light bar. The rest of the band is dark. If you apply the brake while flashing, only the brake light will be displayed. I could suggest what would make these modes more logical, but that's not my job and not the purpose of the review. bottom line. If you were hoping to use this as a full tail light replacement then this is totally unacceptable. As an additional high-mounted flashlight, this is better than nothing in my opinion, but rather illogical and confusing in function and potentially illegal. If you were to use this I would probably recommend not using the lane turn signal features at all.

Pros
  • handy little thing
Cons
  • so far so good
