These spats appear to be blast proof. I've used them a few times, issued shoes in up to a few feet of snow and have not managed to get some snow in my boots. And that while wearing low-top Gore-Tex hiking shoes—not even boots—all the time. They are very easy to attach and adjust. I will say that I feel they are a bit on the big side. I wear size 11.5 shoes and my walking shoes, while not boots, are still quite bulky. The large ones fit easily and I know they would go with a large pair of boots if needed. I feel like I'm swimming in XL in this size. However, a lot depends on the size of the calves. I have relatively slim calves. If you have large calves, you should consider sizing based on the size chart provided. I would size down if you are on the lower end of the scale and don't have large calves.
