This spring compressor is much easier to use than traditional spring compressors. The closed cover around the bolts also offers security if the bolts burst under high pressure. I bought them specifically to build a heavy duty shock absorber for my Toyota 4Runner. I've done this job before with conventional spring compressors. The width of the clamps on these compressors tend to be large and in some places extra thick, preventing the clamp from being removed after the frame is assembled. In this case I would have to hammer the clamps around the spool until it reaches the area of the spring where the gap is large enough to remove it. After a lot of swearing, I usually ended up with brand new feathers, badly scratched with pretty big gouges in the paint. No fun when you're spending $250 on new springs. Featuring a Shankly spring compressor, the clips are streamlined yet secure and strong, and easily fit into spring gaps. A typical job with a conventional compressor takes me 1-1.5 hours. Using a Shankly spring compressor takes 30 minutes. As with any tool, there is a right way and a wrong way to use it. I suspect a lot of the negative feedback comes from people over-stressing a compressor. The key is to add increasing load EVENLY between the two compressors. Adding too much load to a compressor requires tremendous torque to loosen the screw. Thread breakage or potential bolt breakage can occur. This rule applies to every type and design of spring compressor. Use the tool as intended and it will prove you right.
